  Rapid Hire Program

Description:

The Human Resource department at the General Office in Santa Fe, New Mexico has recently implemented a new program called Rapid Hire. This program was designed to advertise 16 of NMDOT’s historically “hard to fill” positions and to place new employees in those positions at a faster rate then before.

The idea of the Rapid Hire Program came from other states who have implemented the program and shared their success stories at the Human Resources AASHTO training conference. The program was implemented in May of 2005 by the HR department once they returned from the conference.

By consolidating the State Personnel Office and NMDOT hiring processes, District HR office and the GO HR department now have the ability to effectively and efficiently fill vacancies with qualified applicants that are best suited for the job in a timelier manner. The NMDOT can recruit directly to people using the internal Rapid Hire Program. Their application is received by the NMDOT HR department right away and interviews can be set up for the next week, versus six to eight weeks before the program was put into action.

Result:

The program has been a great success for the NMDOT. Of 257 rapid hire positions posted, approximately 241 have been filled using the program as of February 2006. The current hiring turnaround time using the program stands at an average of five weeks, versus thirteen weeks one year ago in hard to fill positions.
