  Hasler Valley Interchange

Description:

The Hasler Valley Road intersection project was designed in collaboration with and requested by McKinley County and the City of Gallup. The existing intersection connected Maloney Avenue with Ford Street along with a horizontal curve connecting Hasler Valley Road to Ford/Maloney Road. The continuing development of Hasler Valley Road had resulted in a large increase in truck traffic entering and exiting the Ford/Maloney interchange at Hasler Valley Road with numerous conflict points through the intersection. McKinley County, the City of Gallup, and the NMDOT met on this problem. The agencies agreed to partner in resolving the issues around this interchange.

The location of the existing roads did not easily fit any new design and the previous Hasler Valley Road was only a single lane in each direction and had a very cumbersome turn into Miyamura Drive which was very risky for those entering it. The NMDOT responded with a design for a standard four way intersection with sidewalks, traffic signals and bike lanes throughout the project limits located East of the original roadway. The new design connected Ford Street, Hasler Valley Road, Bataan Veterans Road and Maloney Avenue.

To accomplish this work McKinley County agreed to a land swap with the NMDOT. The McKinley County Road Department also agreed to construct the first portion of the project which was a realignment of Hasler Valley Road to connect it to the new intersection. McKinley County also provided Location, Survey, and Right Of Way to be used in Design of the project.

Result:

The new design has greatly improved traffic were it was once overwhelming. The existing natural areas on the project were disturbed as little as possible. The City Park located in the South West corner of the project had a bike lane and additional trees added to it through this project. The existing sections of Hasler Valley Road that were abandoned were removed. Upon completion of the project compost mulch, which was seeded with a mix of natural vegetation, was placed on all of the disturbed areas of the project. A request was also made to fence the entire area due to livestock in the area. The fence was constructed preventing access to the intersection and
the adjacent portion of I-40.
