  Barbed Wire Dispenser

Description:

Belen Patrol Supervisor Steve Sanchez and Crew 43-54 developed the barbed wire dispenser. After realizing the need for an easier and less time consuming way to erect fences, Steve Sanchez designed the barbed wire dispenser.

Usual fencing operations include handling the heavy rolls of barbed wire and duplicating the same task several times, which is very burdensome to those who must erect the fences and also exposes them to a greater risk of injury. A lot of times a contract crew was utilized, which can sometimes be costly. With the many difficulties that come with fencing operations, a new solution was greatly in need.

A prototype was found in a local fencing operations shop and was developed from there. Using scrap materials, Bill Tyree and Eric Marquez of the Belen Patrol constructed the dispenser, with no material cost to the department. Five rolls of barbed wire are dispensed from the top of a loader tractor’s bucket, which allow barbed wire to be dispensed without the workers having to handle the wire. The loader is also used for cleanup along the way. The new system allows workers to erect fencing 1/8 of a mile at a time and ¼ mile every four hours.

Result:

The innovative design of the barbed wire dispenser has greatly improved the task of fencing for the Belen Patrol Crew 43-54. By utilizing an inmate crew and the barbed wire dispenser instead of having it done by a contract crew, costs have been cut in half. It has also cut the time it takes to construct the fences, twice as fast as the previous methods used before. Along with saving time and money, the barbed wire dispenser has also made it safer for those constructing the fences because there is less duplication of tasks and less handling of the barbed wire.
