The District 4 Wagon Mound Patrol
Crew 44-64 created the asphalt oven to help
them when performing asphalt patching operations. The asphalt oven was designed
to keep asphalt patching material warm in cold weather when the asphalt mix is
hard to break apart.
The oven is built out of metal and uses the exhaust from
the truck to heat the asphalt oven. The oven has two dampers
on the exhaust system to create heat. The dampers can either
release exhaust or keep the exhaust in the oven. The oven
attaches to the tailgate of a pickup truck and was designed
to allow the crew to access the asphalt mix with a shovel
through an access door on the rear of the oven. They are
then able to shovel the hot asphalt mix on the roadway for
different maintenance activities such as pot hole patching.
This
device has been a enormous help to Crew 44-64 during cold
weather.
The asphalt oven’s smart design to solve
the continuous problem of asphalt patching operations in
cold weather is the reason why it was picked as the “Best
Practice Award Winner” for District 4.
